just days after the principal of this elementary school in the south bay is arrested on drug charges, students get ready to return to class. good morning, i'm marla tellez. i'll have more on what they can expect coming up. also san francisco police talking to the community this morning about the recent violence in the city's mission district. and the governor signs three new laws designed to prevent another disaster like san bruno from happening. right now we give you a live look outside. that is the hp pavilion, the home of the san jose sharks. they're actually on ice with that work stoppage going on. wish we had better news on this monday, september 24th. this is "today in the bay." it is 4:30.

good monday morning. i'm jon kelley. >> good morning. we'll help you start your morning by welcoming back meteorologist christina loren fresh off vacation. welcome back. >> hey, good morning to you. yes, it's the first official week of fall and we're starting out with pretty comfortable temperatures. 56 in livermore, 53 at san francisco and a crisp 48 up in santa rosa headed toward a pretty comfortable start toward the workweek and then temperatures soar. lots to talk about in your full forecast. before we get to that point, mike has a serious accident you need to know about. >> yeah, yeah, folks, good morning to you. unfortunately i have to start with horrible news. the part i hate is reporting a deadly accident here in pleasanton. we do have a reporter heading out to 680 southbound. this is just south of the dublin interchange as you come off of 580. and just around stone ridge, the on and off ramps there. i don't know whether or not you can access the freeway there, but you can use foothill road as

your alternate to get south of stone ridge and get on further south. this has closed southbound 680 due to a deadly accident involving a pedestrian. the coroner is called on scene. until the coroner conducts the investigation there will be a complete closure or at least a partial closure. right now watch this and we'll give you more information as it comes in. >> okay, mike. thank you very much. a long-time south bay school principal busted for allegedly trying to sell drugs. marla tellez is live in santa clara with more details on the arrest and the reaction from that school. marla, good morning. >> reporter: jon, good morning. when students and staff arrive here at montague elementary school in santa clara a little later this morning, they are going to be greeted by an interim principal in the wake of what happened on friday. that's when the school principal, 42-year-old eric lewis, was arrested at a caltrain station in san francisco where authorities say he arranged to meet an undercover agent he contacted

through a gay dating website. for some sort of a drug deal. he was booked into santa clara county jail on suspicion of having methamphetamine for sale and offering to furnish narcotics. investigators seized a quarter ounce of meth, drug scales and his computer from his san francisco home over the weekend. the school district is shocked by the arrest, as colleagues here say lewis is well liked. >> we had no sense that there was any connection between what's being alleged had happened in san francisco and what was going on here on a daily basis. no connection whatsoever. >> reporter: now, lewis has been the principal at montague elementary in santa clara for seven years. during that time school officials tell us he has helped improve student achievement scores. while he sits in jail today, he has also been put on unpaid administrative leave by the santa clara county unified school district. lewis is scheduled to be

arraigned in court later today. marla tellez, "today in the bay." 4:33. a san francisco man is in jail this morning accused of trying to kidnap a young girl near an elementary school. police arrested 25-year-old bradley morzak saturday morning. they have linked him to an incident at parkside elementary as well as two other san mateo schools. on friday he allegedly tried to kidnap a 9-year-old girl. she said she managed to escape by kicking him and running back to the school to tell staff what happened. earlier in the day he was spotted at two other schools. a former san francisco crime lab technician accused of stealing drugs on the job goes to trial today. deborah madden used to work as a lab tech for the san francisco police department back in 2009. madden now facing federal charges of stealing cocaine and she could face four years in prison if convicted. the alleged drug theft led to the closure of the criminal lab

and the dismissal of hundreds of criminal cases by prosecutors. that trial is set to start at 8:30 this morning in san francisco. 4:35 now. the raiders first win of the season overshadowed by a dangerous play that sent wide receiver darrius heyward-bey to the hospital with a neck injury. it happened in the fourth quarter. steelers defensive back ryan mundy delivered a helmet-to-helmet hit. heyward-bey was on the ground more than 12 minutes. he was eventually taken off the field on a stretcher, but managed to give a thumbs up sign as he left the field. heyward-bey is in the hospital in castro valley for evaluation. he is in stable condition. >> always scary when you see their head strapped down like that. san francisco police holding a town hall this morning to talk about the recent violence in that mission district. an officer in plain clothing shot and injured a suspected gang member thursday night after the man allegedly aimed a gun at the officer.

the shooting sparked violent demonstrations and protesters vandalized several buildings including a police station. today's meeting will be at 11:30. new safety maintenance rules will soon be in place for california's natural gas pipelines. governor jerry brown signed three new bills into law yesterday that not only strengthen safety laws but also ensure utilities do not cut corners on upgrades in order to give bonuses to executives. the bill was sponsored after a neighborhood was devastated when a gas line exploded in september, 2010. there will be a news conference at 10:00 this morning on the new bills. the governor also signed into law a bill that would make bus companies, chaperones responsible for underage drinking on party buses. assemblyman hill sponsored that in memory of brett studebaker of

burlingame. he died in february 2010 when he crashed his car after hours of drinking on a party bus. the bills will go into effect on january 1st. 4:37. we check back in with christina loren. she is back for our monday forecast. good morning. >> good morning to you. you know, i think of fall, you think temperatures will start to drop off and it will start to feel crisp around here. quite the contrary this week. temperatures are going to be ramping up into the mid-90s. between now and the end of the week we've got some changes ahead. 52 in oakland, 56 down in san jose. weather headlines tell the story of the day. a little patchy fog this morning, mostly clear yipland. comfy sunshine and then we heat you up, starting tomorrow, lasting all week long. today your hour-by-hour forecast works like this. highs come in at about 3:30 in the afternoon. 76 in fremont, 80 in san jose and 72 down in santa cruz. your full forecast just a few

moments away but if you're waking up with us, mike has a very important note for you. >> we have an update for that sig alert, the full freeway closure for 680 just south of the dublin interchange. stoneridge drive is your locator. but south 680 is not accessible from west 580 right now. they're rerouting folks over to foothill road south, then back onto the freeway via stoneridge drive. so at this time of the morning it will be a couple of minutes reroute. allow five, maybe ten minutes if you're unfamiliar with the area but you can get past the scene. the coroner has to arrive and likely another hour before this is clearing. a live look south through san jose and you see the glow from the city lights. no problems as far as the

headlights go. the san francisco giants are getting their lineup ready for a playoff run. >> fans hoping for another world series. today the final day of a nine-game stretch to wrap up the season. then you know what time it is. playoff time. >> champagne was blowing saturday night as the giants clinched a playoff berth. fans and local businesses cannot wait for october. >> reporter: a day after clinching the national league west division title, the giants regulars were given a rest, that is until the ninth inning when they gave their fans a show. >> one thing the giants have not had this year is a walk-off home run. >> reporter: and when the win streak came to an end, it didn't seem to matter. >> i was hoping for a win but i had a great time at the game. >> i think they'll go all the way. it has that feeling. >> reporter: the feeling of 2010 when the giants won the world series. already fans are talking about tickets for the playoffs, which

begin october 6th. >> are you going to try to get tickets to the playoffs? >> you bet. you bet. >> to be a giants fan, you have to be here to see it and feel it. >> reporter: ball fans anxiously wait to buy tickets to postseason play. at the dugout store, championship shirts and giants apparel are flying off the racks. >> it's crazy. they need to expand this store. there's way too many people and it's not like they don't own the place, you know what i mean? break down some walls, make some more aisles, sell some more stuff. >> reporter: restaurants and bars around at&t park are also reaping the benefits of the big win and happily preparing for the playoffs. >> i think a lot of people come down just because they want to be part of the energy, you know, the excitement of what's going on and stuff like that. and then they look for a place to watch the game. they know they can't get tickets or they're not going to spend that kind of money and so they camp out and it turns into an extension of the stadium. >> reporter: local business owners say it's baseball season that really carries them

through, and the giants getting into the playoffs, well, in the words of one general manager, it's just crazy. in san francisco, kimberly tere, nbc bay area news. >> playoff fever, catch it. if you were pitcher barry zito was left off the giants 2010 playoff run but this time it looks like he will be included. manager bruce bochy says the plan is to include all five starters in the roster. zito or ryan vogelsong would pitch game four with the other one coming out of the bullpen. >> we'll watch and keep you posted. just over a week away from the first presidential debate and the candidates continue to take some swipes at each other. the latest details next. plus southern california on fire. a major wildfire sending people running. and apple and samsung continue their patent battle. what both sides are asking for now in a live report.

4:44. the pakistani government is distancing itself from a bounty placed on the filmmaker of an anti-islam movie. officials say they're rejecting the $100,000 offer by a government minister.

they say his remarks going against official policy. the minister was upset over the youtube movie "innocence of muslims." it has sparked deadly violence in many countries an even led to the death of the u.s. ambassador to libya. they have called it inflammatory and inappropriate. >> the chinese company ma makes the iphone is suspending production because of an in-house riot. it made the move after 2,000 workers were involved in a fight at a campus dorm yesterday. over 2,000 workers. the company investigating what triggered that fight but denies it was work related. chinese bloggers disagree and say the battle erupted after a security guard allegedly hit an employee. they will resume production tomorrow. in the meantime apple continues to be the market darling after iphone 5 sales took off over the weekend. for more on that and the rest of our news before the bell, we turn to bertha coombs live at

cnbc world headquarters. >> reporter: good morning, laura. the futures are pointing to a lower start. we had appear anemic session in the markets on friday. this morning european stocks are lower. we had some weaker than expected german data and continuing worries about the spanish debt situation. a lot of key moments this week on that. a lot of folks will be watching spain. plus we also seem to have this monday problem when it comes to the dow jones industrial average. it's been down 18 of the past 20 mondays. we'll start off down today as well. as far as data here, we're going to get most of it at the end of the week, particularly housing data, including new home sales and mortgage applications as well as readings on the pace of economic gross domestic product and personal spending and income. the dow fell on friday 17 points to 13,579 and the nasdaq was up, thanks in part to apple, to 3179. apple, it seems there isn't a day it doesn't set some new record. last week it was over $700 a

share. now this week will be the week about record sales. a new report from a research firm found that the first three days of iphone 5 preorders, just the preorders, amounted to more sales than the iphone 4s had in one month. so amazing to see. we're all going to be waiting to see what kind of reports apple reports from the weekend. the reports that stores in major cities sold out of iphones available on the verizon and at&t network and quickly said they had sold out of their preorders of two million devices just in the first 24 hours. it's not all good news, though, the battle between the iphone maker and samsung is likely never to end. both sides are unhappy with that $1 billion verdict that sound samsung infringed on the technology in the iphones and ipads. apple says sam susunamsung's

as we head throughout the afternoon. they're going to climb nicely. in fact we're talking about the 70s as of noon in places like san jose and livermore. so if you want to get outdoors, it's going to be so nice. the air quality is also didn't. look at this, no fog to report at 10:00 a.m. from novato through san francisco. then the marine layer pushes way offshore. if you're standing in san francisco, you'll see the marine layer way out in the pacific later on that and that means crystal clear conditions warming you up to 70, perfection in the city. 80 degrees in san jose, and 87 in fairfield. seven-day outlook tells you we're going to heat up as we head towards the end of the week. mid-90s return thursday into friday and it stays hot this weekend. as you know, once it starts to get cold it comes in quick so if you want to make beach plans, go ahead and do so. pretty soon we'll be talking p rain and cold, you know it's coming. back to you. >> and you will warn us, thank you very much. 4:49.

firefighters in southern california are continuing to battle a large wildfire. the shockey fire has burned more than 1700 acres in an area 65 miles east of san diego. mandatory evacuations are actually still in effect. a handful of buildings have been destroyed completely. so far there is no reported injuries. firefighters have been able to contain 10% of the blaze since it first started. fire crews are also battling a brush fire near the town of marietta. 60 acres have been scorched since the fire broke out yesterday. no mandatory evacuations have been called and so far no one is hurt an the fire has not destroyed any buildings. now to decision 2012. election day is now 43 days away but early voting by mail is under way in two dozen states. today president barack obama getting ready f a meeting with

the united nations while mitt romney's camp is hoping for a fresh start. romney kicking off a three-day tour of ohio. he wants to shift the conversation back to jobs, the economy and leadership after last week's release of a secret videotape and more tax information. now he's hoping to get back to the task at hand, attacking president obama. >> i said, you know, you can't change washington from the inside, you can only change it from the outside. we're going to give him that chance on november 6th. >> as for president obama, he is releasing a tv ad just blasting romney for criticizing 47% of americans who don't pay income taxes without, quote, having come clean about his own. the first debate is set for october 3rd. 4:51. coming up, the big winners and losers of last night's primetime emmy awards. and we have problems in the tri-valley as i track a sig

"modern family" dominating at the 64th annual emmy awards. >> this is an embarrassment of riches. >> skbeeindeed it is. it won best comedy series and best supporting actress and actor. the director brought home an award as well. the series "homeland" on fire, winning a lot. >> we're delighted and thrilled and i think a little startled by this. >> in addition to outstanding drama and outstanding writing for a drama series, the show swept the best actor categories taking home the emmys. this marks the very first time a big emmy win for that show time series. big night. >> yellow was the color of the night as well. interesting to see. 4:55 right now. we want to check the morning commute. it's been a rough one. >> a tough, tough day to start with this news, a deadly accident.

the investigation continues for southbound 680, which keeps that freeway completely closed south of the dublin interchange. now, coming down through the middle of your screen you see southbound 680. it's all yellow. for a while it was orange and red as they put traffic breaks in place. south 680 is diverted over to west 580 to get over to foothill road, south, then back on the freeway on stoneridge drive. bob redell is heading to the scene to bring us more details. we know a pedestrian has been hit and killed on the freeway just north of stoneridge drive. we'll take you for a look across the bay. san mateo bridge moves smoothly. visibility is fine here and the drive on the peninsula is clear as well but we'll continue to follow that sig alert on the tri-valley area. get ready for carmageddon part two. the second part of a massive construction project will close a key stretch of the 405 in los angeles this weekend. this is actually video from last
